Jailbreak of the PS5 seems imminent

The PlayStation 5 has only been out for a year, but hackers already appear to have made significant headway toward jailbreaking Sony's latest console.

It was revealed on Twitter by TheFlow0 and Fail0verflow that they had successfully unlocked the PlayStation 5's debug mode and gained access to tools that allowed them to decrypt some of the console's firmware. TheFlow0, well known in the scene for his work with the PlayStation Vita, posted an image of the PS5's settings menu with a new option for "Debug Settings" at the bottom. These are usually reserved for the development kit, and it is for companies to test their games, but achieving this on a standard PS5 could indicate that TheFlow0 has found some kind of exploit in the PS5 kernel.

The Flow0 screenshot was also taken to Twitter using the PS5, as several users have pointed out, making it appear less plausible that this is a hoax. In recent years, he has amassed a total of approximately $ 20,000 in reward money for resolving Sony security issues. Neither theFlow0 nor fail0verflow seem ready to release any more information on how they managed to get these things done in such a short time, and it's not very clear how quickly everything will develop from here. In addition to the fact that hacked consoles can unavoidably open the door to game piracy, they can also be used to run operating systems such as Linux, allowing them to play PC games or emulated games.

To give you an idea, the PlayStation 3 was released in 2006, but it wasn't until 2011 that hackers were able to compromise it. The PlayStation 4 experienced a similar situation when it was first released in 2013, and the jailbreak methods were only made available in 2018. In other words, if these recent PS5 hacking advancements are correct, it may still be some time before the PS5 gets jailbroken. Sony will not be comforted by this revelation, the corporation has not responded to this information as of yet.
