Intel Shows 28-core processor die-shot

Intel Shows 28-core processor die-shot

During its Technology and Manufacturing Day Intel has shared a slide of a server-processor with 28 cores. The die-shot as such must be the Skylake-SP series of products in the Xeon Platinum range.

Yes, Platinum. Each core would get 1024KB of L2 cache. The Xeon SKUs always have been segmented into a numeric schema, like the E5-2640 v5. Starting with the 8000 series the 22 to 28 core models will be the flagship products, these will be the Xeon Platinum series.  The 14 to 22 core parts 5000 and 6000 series will be the gold models.  The 4000 series on their end will get 10 cores, will be the Silver series.

The new processors will be based on a new socket (Yes intel LOVES new sockets) called LGA 3647. Earlier on a user on the Anandtech forums already posted the new lineup and specs on these processors, though that remains unconfirmed information. It is unclear yet when Intel will announce the new Xeon processors.

You make a point here that actually intrigues me. If it's just a 7700k put into a 2066 sized "structure", that means there will be a bit more surface area on the heat spreader. I wonder if that will do anything for temps? Just a curiosity.

My other points didn't intrigue you then ;)

Perhaps more surface area would be useful, as I think I've read the tdp is up as well, there's also no igpu to I think and no doubt it should support quad channel mems

It could be a cheaper entry point into the X299 platform you know before you bang 10 in that bitch

This is true but unless this CPU comes in at $230 it will be a flop. I thought SL-E or X whatever it will be called would start at 8 core in the consumer segment? Also throwing kaby lake-x or e out first is od and goes against everything Intel has done in the HEDT market till now.

On a side note can't wait for people to defend AM44.

Intel has nothing to compare the AM4 socket against. They do not have a socket that all of their consumer based cpus will use.

Actually they do it's 1151. AM4 just overachieved on the power PC side of things. AM44 will be what competes with X299.
