Intel Seems to adopt ATX12VO Standard starting at Alder Lake-S Motherboards
An interesting development has been spotted. The ATX12VO power standard is somewhat new yet coming and can help out in increased efficiency for desktop power supplies. The standard does require a compatible motherboard with a 10-pin power connector and compatible power supply, which only features a 12 V rail.
So if released, the adoption rate will be slow as there then would be two standards. The main difference being That any voltage conversion different from 12V will be performed directly by the motherboard. So, on the one hand, you get a very simplified energy-efficient power supply that roots only 12V, and on the other hand, you'll see a far more complex motherboard when components that differ from 12V are required.
From the looks of things, Intel is interested in softly evangelizing the standard, Starting with next-gen 600-series motherboards that will be the infrastructure for Alder Lake-S processors. We think this solution will find its way to entry-level products and system builders first. The current design PSUs will be here for many, many years.

Theres absolutely no point to it, psu's in the last 10 years are already doing DC-DC conversion for super efficiency, this is just putting it in a location where it can be used to justify doubling mainboard costs.

You think that's bad i just bought a MSI 850W PSU less than a month a go because my last one Cooler master silent 850w which was like 13 years old tb was not longer delivering enough current to the GPU and had major stability issues when playing anything that put heavy load on the GPU.

This is what I'm scared of and I guarantee PSU prices will not drop to compensate.

The good point is to separate the 12V it make the board more stable this way (it's also a mod that some do for extreme OC... So it work)...
The so/so point is: ahmmm do we really need that on mainstream segment? i would said No, but future will tell us
