Intel Releases Core i9 9980XE processor

Intel Releases Core i9 9980XE processor

Intel just unleashed its Core i9 9980XE processor, an 18-core CPU that can be seated onto socket 2066 and yes, it can be used on existing X299 motherboards. The processor gets a suggested retail price of 1979 US dollars.

Core i9 9980XE is Skylake-X family and thus a refresh processor that holds faster base and turbo clock frequencies. The base clock for the 9980XE is 3 GHz, which is substantially higher than its predecessor (400 MHz). The maximum single-core turbo clock speed is listed to be 4.5 GHz, 100 MHz higher than the 7980XE. The all-core turbo of the 9980XE is unknown but from what we are reading seems to be 3.8 GHz.

The Core i9 9980XE with 18 cores and 36 threads will sell for 1979 dollars, excl VAT.  We hope to review the proc soon, but that is totally at the liberty of Intel, of course.

2990WX here costs 1940€ average.
I'm not going to buy one, but I'd have 14 more cores for almost the same price wile not have my house burnt down please!

I'm not sure what Intel is trying to prove here other than following their distinctly stupid policy of trying to pretend there is no competition.

I've said this before, it's a competent strategy when you don't actually have any competition, but when your competitor has a CPU with almost double the cores for a similar price, I'm not sure it's the most prudent course of action.

I mean, the reality is that while this is not the type of chip that everyone runs out and buys, I'm sure even the most ardent Intel supporters are considering their options at this point.

Actually, these things are distinctly unimpressive and also totally unnecessary as it seems to be nothing more than a glorified 7980XE.

I think you underestimate people's loyalty to a brand. When Intel releases something like this, people are in fact convinced it is the best. As stupid as that policy may be, it is in fact working.
