Intel Reacts to Ryzen with new Kaby Lake Core i5 7640k and i7 7740K Processors
It does seem that the pending AMD Ryzen launch will stir the processor arena, Intel certainly is reacting. From the looks of it Intel will respin their Kaby Lake series with high clocked models and they will be adding Hyper-threading towards the Core i5 line of processors.
The new information was shared by CanardPC. The i5 7640k would be clocked 200 MHz faster then the 7600k is, which makes it a 4.0 GHz unit. The Core i7 7740K will get a 100 MHz higher clock frequency. These are added on the base clock, Turbo frequencies are yet to be announced. With a slightly higher clocked Kaby Lake Intel increased its lead in applications.
Processor | Core i7-7740K | Core i7-7700K | Core i5-7640K | Core i5-7600K |
---|---|---|---|---|
Cores/threads | 4/8 | 4/8 | 4/? | 4/4 |
Hyper-threading | Yes | Yes | N/A | No |
Base clock | 4.2GHz | 4.0GHz | 4.0GHz | 3.8GHz |
Turbo clock | 4.6GHz (assume) | 4.5GHz | N/A | 4.2GHz |
Tdp | > 100 Watt | 91 Watt | > 100 Watt | 91 Watt |
L3-cache | 8MB | 8MB | 6MB | 6MB |
That's as good as it gets with clock frequencies, the biggest and more intersting feature processor however is to be spotted in the Core i5 range, as you will spot that the 7640k will also get hyper-threading, and that is a huge step forward for the i5 range alright. The TDP of both models would become higher than the 91W of 7600K and 7700k, 100W is mentiones for both K models.
All these changes in an already new line-up does seem a little 'panicy' from Intel, Kaby Lake may have fewer cores than the Zen-processors, but in terms of IPC and Intel should still be ahead - meaning Kaby Lake should be faster in applications and games that use up to four cores.
Intel also is trying to move coffee lake forward and introduce 6-core processors, but is not clear when coffee lake will become available.

lol, i5 with HT. This is the proof that Intel was milking and selling us a 4c/4t for 250€ when they should done this years ago.
What a mess. This is a panic alright.

I certainly think this move means something, but I am still not sure what. Intel has done sometingh odd, and if it is related to AMD, I agree that this would be the most valuable piece of information regarding Ryzen price/performance ratio so far.
There is a way I can see this mean bad news for Ryzen. If Intel already has information (big corporations have inteliigence agencies) this move could mean that with these little tweaks their CPUs will still be (at stock speeds) confortably ahead of Ryzen for games and aplications that require 4 thread or less.
This also unleashes hype for Ryzen and that is not a good thing. If AMD is not up to the inflated hype, Intel could win the psicological war by getting the customer that feel cheated.
If Intel would drop prices in another odd move... that would be unquestionable good news for AMD and for all of us.
We are 3 weeks away from the moment of truth, so we'll see soon enough

It's time for Intel to make I3 4C/4T , I5 4C/8T and I7 6C+ as standard. It's ridiculous that we still have 2C cpu's for desktop at 2017.

That HT i5 is the surest sign that something is going wrong for Intel.

Unreal Engine supports HT and it is beneficial to its performance since version 2.x. (Just saying.)
But lately i5 feels weak, not because it became weaker, but because there is more junk running in background of OS.
Have you heard of MsMpEng? That's microsoft's Antimalware which tends to scan anything and everything what gets loaded. It easily hogs one core of CPU.
Same goes for Indexing service which on "random" decides to do its stuff.
In worst case scenario MS will turn quad core into dual core. That's sad to experience.
Last time I was to install android studio, I did run into 25% CPU utilization from installer, 25% from Antimalware and 25% from indexing service as those things were fighting over data processed by installer and put on drive. Running youtube in browser with 200+ tabs while installation was going did not felt like I have PC capable to do multitasking.
So having 6 cores or HT is actually something one should aim for. I can tell you that when MS decides to kill performance of my Atom tablet (4 cores, no HT) it does it easily.
Yes, 4 cores were fine for many years, but not anymore. For next 4~5 years one either needs 8-cores or 6 cores+HT.
I have like 3 or maybe 4 tabs open at the same time max. No real-time antivirus or antimalware software here, MsMpEng is disabled via Autoruns, other things as well.
