Intel preps Socket H1 for mainstream Core i7

Processor 721 Published by

It will be a long time before they are introduced, in fact Q3 of 2009 is the word on that. But Intel is prepping yet another processor socket. We mentioned this in our Core i7 review already but Intel plans Socket H1 for mainstream Core i7 processors. The mainstream products that will go with is will be Havendale and for the quads, Lynnfield. The new socket is needed because the mainstream processors will not have a triple channel memory controller but a dual-channel controller and as such has less pins.

Socket H1 is in fact also known as Socket 1160/1156. This means that current Core i7 processors on LGA 1366 will not be compatible with the new Socket model. So mainstream Core i7 processors are coming .. but they for sure are far away, meaning that Core 2 Duo and Quad processors will be arround for much longer.
