Intel halts cheap non-K overclocking by closing Skylake BIOS loophole

Intel halts cheap non-K overclocking by closing Skylake BIOS loophole

Yesterday we already reported that ASRock silently removed they Sky OC feature from their BIOSes, as it turns out the rest will follow. The core BIOS files are provided by Intel, and they have confirmed not to allow this type of overclocking any longer.

Intel’s microcode update apparently hasn’t been issued yet, but it’ll likely be given out to motherboard vendors who will integrate the update into BIOS updates. That probably means those who are using the exploit now could keep rolling it—if they never update the BIOS.

”Intel regularly issues updates for our processors which our partners voluntarily incorporate into their BIOS,” an Intel spokesman said. “The latest update provided to partners includes, among other things, code that aligns with the position that we do not recommend overclocking processors that have not been designed to do so. Additionally, Intel does not warranty the operation of the processor beyond its specifications.”

At this time ASRock, MSI, Gigabyte, Biostar and  Asus are advertising Non-K OC features in their BIOS and involves Z170-, H170-, B170- and B150 chipset based motherboards.

Yep, Intel likes your extra 50 bucks for the K models. You might want to grab and hold on to that BIOS if you planned to OC by BLCK.

Hilbert's last line sums it up perfectly. Nothing more to say than this imho.

The last 5-6 years of development in the CPU market have been increasingly depressing :(

Who the hell updates their bios on a regular basis? Seriously, so many things could go wrong it that the sole reason to even consider an update is nasty bug (or a feature you desperately need). In other words, if it ain't broken don't touch it.

Alot of people. Me included. Never had a problem.
I even use UEFI Bios updater to update all the core modules myself.
