Intel Comet Lake Procs for Desktop has 1200 pins - to require a new motherboard

Intel Comet Lake Procs for Desktop has 1200 pins - to require a new motherboard

Yeah, it's been a bit messy with AMD on the PCIe Gen 4.0 thing at X470 I know, but hey, props to AMD to make it possible to use so many generations of processors with even an architecture change on three generations of chipsets with the same socket. Now, the topic, Intel will (at one point) release Comet Lake desktop processors.

Xfastest received a reader's letter with slides indicating 'allegedly' that Comet Lake comes with a design with a maximum of 10 cores and 20 threads, but the pin count, however, will be LGA 1200, and that is yet another socket and thus once again you'll need to purchase a new motherboard.

The information provided by the anonymous user does not indicate a source but looking at the slides they are rather similar to the style of the previous INTEL data files. From one of the Comet Lake-S Platform Overview images, the processor does have up to 10 cores and 20 threads, Wi-Fi 802.11ax, INTEL RST 17, and more. In addition, the pin section should be LGA 1200, the highest TDP 125W and wait for it ... the INTEL 400 chipset.

The reader also has another picture that Comet Lake believes it will be launched in the first quarter of 2020, but it does not list the detailed model of the processor, nor can it verify or confirm the authenticity of the i9-10900KF model. In any case, the LGA 1151 has been used by Skylake, KabyLake, and CoffeeLake for different generations, and it is inevitable that the next generation of Comet Lake will replace slots, chipsets, and motherboards.

wow upped the "enthusiast" socket to 125W. Looks like they will be going for the moon this time around.

A whole new socket, which means this isn't just a cosmetic change, yet no PCIe 4.0? Intel is again going all out, it seems.
