The threads are automatically created, but you do need to select a forum section.

Next time, go to the 'advanced tab' and select Frontpage news as forum. That's where a thread will be posted then. But this only happens once you post the news item.

What you can do now is create a thread linking to the news item and then manually select it in "Use the following forum thread for comments"
