HWInfo Diagnostic tool adds new NVIDIA GPUs Support - Volta

Often a bit of naming leaks through software release info. A week or so ago you might have noticed, HWInfo was updated. And initially I missed the added info, but the tool is now actively listing two new NVIDIA GPU entries.

We all know that NVIDIA has something brewing in that kettle of theirs, we all know it will be the 11xx series (GTX 1160, 1170 and 1180), but no one really knows what GPU architecture it'll be based on, and kudos/cudas to NVIDIA for keeping that under wraps. It is expected to be Turing, but I will keep saying it, Turing never was listed in their roadmaps. The most logical thing for them to do would be a Pascal respin with GDDR6 memory, Turing with GDDR6 memory.

However and realistically I think this is the case, Turing simply also could be Volta stripped from the Tensor cores and thus GeForce GTX 11xx would be Volta based. Now Volta GPUs have been around for a while, just not in the consumer domain. This is what the entries in HWinfo spike my interests, as Malik added: Nvidia GV102- en GV104-GPUs. Expect announcements late August on the new card(s).

Why would you ship 500+mm2 cards to beat last generation models when you can wait a few months and ship 300mm2 ones? Doesn't make any sense to me.

As usual, you make a lot of sense. I could only see what you described in the above sentence happening if they know they won't get a 300mm² core soon, or if, and that's kind of out there, they didn't think they'd end up with as many chips of Pascal resting around, and need to ramp up their offers because of competition, or more likely, unwillingness of the market to buy said 500mm² GPU cards (which I could imagine if they're not pushing the performance enough).

1170 5% faster than 1080ti,
1180 25% faster than 1080ti
and 1180ti 55% faster than 1080ti.
Simple mathematics.

Buddy, I don't know what kind of Herb you are smoking but those numbers are a bit off. My 980Ti classified was 21-22k on firestrike (stock cooler, on air), about the same as a 1080 (stock cooler, on air), max 2-5% difference in frames. However, my 1080ti SC Black is about 32-33k (Stock cooler, on air), which is about 50% faster than either of them.

So, no need to expect anything better this time around as well.

Base your numbers on some facts, or they will stink up the place.

I see. So if the jump in performance is minimal, the new series will have a little life time and no TI model will be in production.

Perhaps 1160 will equal 1070, 1170 will equal 1080 (11gbps) and finally a simple ~10% improvement in performance with 1180 vs 1080ti.

Yep, that is what I am hoping.

On the top end, considering Titan V (~800mm2) with HBM2 memory, which has almost double the die size of 1080ti (~400mm2), is only 30% faster (in games) at max when compared to 1080ti with GDDR5X. So, if they cut out tensor cores, and it gets shrunk to a 1180ti (~600mm2), it may be about 30% faster than 1080ti.

Only time will tell how wrong I am, but for now these are my calculations.

That could be a 1180ti but I don't know what profit Nvidia has to produce a gaming gpu titan class for a 30% improvement after two whole years. Perhaps without real rivalry from Amd this time around they will give a semi-next gen gpu. I fear until 2020 things in PC technology will not run as fast as they did.
