Huawei shows off the Ascend P6, world's thinnest smartphone. The device is just 6.18mm thick, it weighs 120g and has a full metal enclosure. The Ascend P6 offers an unnamed 1.5GHz quad-core processor, a 4.7" screen with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and magicTouch, 2GB RAM, Android 4.2.2, 8GB internal storage, microSD memory card slot, an 8MP digicam, GSM/UMTS/HSPA+ support, and a 2000mAh battery.

It features a metal and glass construction that Huawei hopes will improve its reputation for design and prove attractive to owners of the new iPhone 5 and Galaxy S4. Samsung has been criticised for its extensive use of plastic.

The P6 is also expected to retail on contracts costing approximately £25 per month rather than the £35 per month of its rivals. It features a 4.7” screen, sitting between Apple’s 4.5” and the S4’s 5”.

Richard Yu, Huawei’s Consumer Business Group chief executive claimed the device would be “a star among smartphones”.

Huawei has claimed that it will be one of the top three consumer brands in the world by 2015, and is pursuing a strategy of undercutting its rivals while also producing devices with higher specifications.

It has struggled in the past, however, with supply problems, accusations that it is a front for the Chinese state, spying on Western governments, and with marketing that has not appealed to European and American consumers. Carphone Warehouse sold Huawei’s previous flagship as “the best phone you’ve never heard of”
