The upcoming HEVC (H.265) video codec promises to deliver 4K video at 60fps using just 10Mbps per second. H.265/High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the successor codec to H.264, which, like H.264, is jointly developed by the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group and ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG). The primary goal of the new codec is 50 percent better compression efficiency than H.264 and support for resolutions up to 8192x4320. That's quite an impressive feat, considering most video codecs today require 20-25Mbps to stream 1080p HD video at high quality settings. The standard itself was approved by the ITU and ISO on January 25th and since then has been touted by various organizations involved as the future of HD video playback. HEVC members claim that H.265 halves the data used by H.264 at the same or better level of quality. Docomo states that they plan to license their codec in March for Full-HD video playback on smartphones, which should enable much faster playback and video quality improvements, says BSN.
