GTA 5 Online PC: confusion as Rockstar starts banning mods
Some gamers of GTA V Online for PC report being banned for using a number of different mods. The GTA 5 PC sub-Reddit is filled with posts about this, it is rather confusing if cosmetic mods are just as bannable as those that give the player an unfair advantage.
One user posted an image saying he was banned from GTA Online for using an FOV mod. The thread is filled with conflicting reports from users who continue to play using mods.
Another thread shows a screengrab of a reply from Rockstar support sent in response to a player asking if FOV mods will result in a ban.
Here’s what he had to say:
Cosmetic mods here could simply refer to visual changes like colour or environment effects. An FOV mod, while cosmetic in nature, is probably achieved by injecting the game’s memory the same way a trainer would. Using a trainer – in any online game – is obviously not allowed. And this is where the water gets even muddier.
A large part of this confusion is due to Rockstar’s reluctance to reveal a list of bannable offences to the community, which is somewhat understandable given the nature of PC mods and the different means they utilise to achieve their results. Via vg247.com

What does that actually mean? If I happen to run GTA5, and have purely optical and graphics mods installed (shaders, or soon to see car mods for example), I will get banned and won't be able to play GTA5 anymore?
Or is it just related to the moment I try to join an online game mode or a server? Because I would not want to play GTA5 online, so I wouldn't care about it at all.

A mod that alters the FOV beyond the values provided by the game is a cheat in the online mode since it gives and advantage over normal players therefore it is no wonder it was banned.

Since mods themselves are supported there should also be something (added) to monitor them - even get a simple list of installed mods.
So when joining an online server etc there'd be for example a warning informing you of not allowed installed mods. Or disable them in-game. Add some servers with more loose restrictions on mods.
