GTA 5 is the best selling game of the past 22 years
NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella has stated in a tweet that GTA 5 is the best selling game since founding its market research company in 1995. Rockstar Games sold over 80 million sold copies.
When Grand Theft Auto 5 was released exclusively for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 back in September 2013, it was soon apparent that the gangster game from Rockstar Games was bound to set some records. The title was able to generate 1 billion US dollars in sales within a few days. Later onwards releases of the Playstation 4 and Xbox, and PC version followed as well.
Mat Piscatella, the market researcher of the NPD Group, has stated in a tweet that Grand Theft Auto 5 is the best selling game of the last 22 years, that's basically because the market research agency was founded in 1995. Hence best selling title eveah? Meanwhile Piscatelle has deleted the tweet.
80 million sold copies go to the account of Rockstar Games for GTA 5. This number is based on distribution over all published platforms. An important factor for the sales probably is also the online mode, which is constantly supplied with new content and thus continues to attract new players. Thinking about this, actually I think minecraft sold more copies?

No surprise they sold that much when the same people bought the game two or three times! Once on last gen consoles, again on current gen consoles, and a third time on the PC. Rockstar know what they're doing to maximize profits and they're doing the same thing with Red Dead Redemption 2. You just know PC users will buy in on console then again on PC. I for one won't be throwing my money at R* with multiple purchases.

I think a large number of the sales comes down to the timing of release. It was originally released on Xbox 360 and PS3, those interested in the GTA series would have rushed out and bought it. These same people woudl have gone on to buy the Xbox One and PS4, which of course was much better graphically so they had to go out and by a copy for their new respective consoles.
For instance (hypothetical numbers) iff 30 million of those copies were sold on Xbox 360 and PS3, they probably got another 25 million copies sold simply from those people wanting the updated graphics on their shiny new consoles. If you look at the number of owners (owners, not those who pirated it) of these games the figure would be much less than 80 million. This is important to consider since most other games weren't spread over so many platforms with enticement for dual ownership due to the updated versions.

Minecraft might have sold more copies but for half the price. So maybe GTAV made more profit.

"Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact name."

As for taste, it's subjective -- he might have played hundreds of games and still find himself preferring GTAV.
The piracy comment was clearly tongue in cheek.
A modern shooter without ADS is bad? I'll take old school arena shooters any day of the week, the skill ceiling in the likes of Quake 3 is miles above the hordes of modern ADS titles.
