Google Translate Intros Instant Text Translations
Google today announced updates to its Android and iOS Translate apps that make having real-time conversations between two different languages much easier. First, Google Translate now lets users instantly translate text using the camera.
When the camera is pointed at signs or text in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish, it will instantly overlay the words in English (and vice versa). Previously, users had to take a picture to get text translation. Now translation occurs in real time. Further, Google has improved the performance of its real-time conversation mode, which allows two people to speak directly to one another using different languages. The app can recognize when two different languages are being spoken and translate them back and forth during a face-to-face conversation. Google said the new versions of Google Translate for Android and iOS should arrive in the next few days. Google pointed out that this is the first time it has offered some of the advanced features -- camera and spoken translation -- to the iOS app.
Google Translate is free.

Couple of guys were jailed over here in the UK recently, because that was the only method they could use to communicate with unsuspecting girls who had been brought over here from places like Kosovo for the purpose of arranged marriages.
The registrars in the area concerned became suspicious when that was the only way that the girls could use to understand what was going on.
The laughable thing about all this was the use of iPods.
No bog-standard Chinese tablets or mobiles for them!
No sir.

I don't believe in translations of any kind. They don't work and never will...
Names, swear words and any type of slang will not be corrected resulting in incorrect words!!
Nothing better than writing yourself...

I'd use it for languages I cannot understand or write, because I've never learned them. So it's not an option to do it myself. But, as I'm not going on vacation now, I'll just want to check it out for toying around with it

Hmmm gotta try that out, looks interesting. Reminds me of the universal translater from Star Trek.
