Google Drive could soon be the entire contents of a PC or Mac online storage for backup. A new app will replace the current Google Drive app and Google Photos desktop uploader.

Google Drive will be getting a new app in the form of Backup and Sync. From what we can tell from Google’s post, Backup and Sync will be replacing the standard Google Drive and Google Photos Backup app for Mac and PCs, but the existing Drive app will continue to stick around if that’s what users prefer as Backup and Sync will be a separate download.

Users can also on other computers using Google Drive on their files, and some files open and edit via the browser. It is not clear whether the function can be later used to always sync files between different computers to keep. It’s not clear exactly how much you’ll be able to do with the expanded backup feature. You’ll presumably be able to open and edit some common file types within Drive, as you’ve already been able to. But it’s not clear if you’ll be able to sync those files back down to multiple other computers, using Drive as an intermediary.

Your 15 GB of standard storage however will however be quickly filled. Additional storage costs 1.99 per month for 100GB or 9.99 per month for 1 TB. Backup and Sync will launch June 28th for Mac and Windows users.
