Gigabyte AORUS GTX 1080 External Gaming Box Launches
Gigabyte released their second model of the External Gaming Box, this round it was fitted with a GTX 1080. The external box is intended for laptops with mandatory Tunderbolt 3 link. The unit also feeds of its own power supply.
A few months ago Gigabyte already had released their GTX 1070 version. The new revised update reveals a GTX 1080 with a Core clock of 1,607MHz, a boost of 1,733MHzand the memory clock is 10,010MHz. These boxes are W96 × D212 × H162mm in size and weigh in at 2,370g. The power supply unit is a 450W that carries an 80PLUS GOLD certification, of cours ethere is a good 16.7 million colors full-color illumination of "RGB Fusion" as well.

Looks like it's going to be a rather loud sollution.
I guess what they want to offer is some kind of easy GPU upgrade to laptops, which you can eventually replace a year down the line, especially if your laptop only has an iGPU to start with.

Well the laptop can remain slim, portable and quite for work / study and when you get home you can play games maxed out too.
Now Intel have opened up Thunderbolt for free these boxes are going to be a Lot cheaper and I think very popular too.
What is the point,i thought laptops where meant to be portable you will need a suitcase to move this lot around.

I have been looking for a solution like this for over a year now. Took way too long before they finally hit the market.
I am owning a MSI GS60 6QE with a 6700HQ Skylake quadcore and a Geforce 970M which makes gaming a lot of fun on my separate 32" full HD monitor. I dock the laptop when I get home and plug in externa DAC, Mechanical Keyboard, gaming mouse and External screen on a cooler platform. Then in the morning I leave the house and put the super slim laptop in my bag onto the office. Where I have another mouse and a charger just to plug it in. Perfect combination of 2 worlds. My laptop is super thin and light and I can game in the office without any problem. But here it comes. I want to start using VR at home and even though the processor is easily up to the task, the GPU isn't. The laptop is just over a year old and I greatly enjoy most aspects of it, I really don't need to replace it any time but I do need extra GPU grunt at home for VR.
This box would be the solution!
Have all my stuff inside my laptop 512GB Samsung 950 PRO ssd and 2GB internal drive. And when I get home I just dock it and extend its capabilities on par with any solid standalone gaming rig.
