GeForce GTX 1080 Cooler Photo Leaks ?

GeForce GTX 1080 Cooler Photo Leaks ?

Over at the Asia region based Chiphell (who found it through a baidu site) a photo appeared of what could be the GeForce GTX 1080 cooling solution.

Right first my disclaimer, it's a photo spotted on a vague Chinese website. That's pretty much all I can say about the realibility of this photo. The photo is pretty darn poor quality and if you look closely, that's either very bad JPEG compression or visually noticeable photo-shopped content. So I for one would not count on the validity of the photo. But hey who knows right ?

The GeForce GTX 1080 (if it's called that) would be based on a GP104-200 GPU. The GP104 based GTX 1080 would get a 256-bit memory controller tied to 8GB of gddr5x memory. The usage of gddr5x over regular gddr5 remains rather speculative as we might just end up with regular gDDR5 memory (GDDR5X is your standard GDDR5 memory however, opposed to delivering 32 byte/access to the memory cells, this is doubled up towards 64 byte/access. And that in theory could double up graphics card memory bandwidth to 800~1000 GB/sec.

Pascal GPUs are fabbed in the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) (recently hit by an earthquake) based on the new 16nm FinFET process. 16nm should result in significant power savings.

The photo leak suggest that NVIDIA will unveil new iteration of NVTTM cooling solution branded with GeForce GTX 1080 logos. In short, I'll believe it when I see the real thing. Have a peek (click the thumbnail below).

The picture here does match that of the previous leak where we saw the milled shroud of the 1080 and 1070 cards.

Personally I don't like it, I preferred the sleak simplistic design of the previous generations. But these babies will get watercooled so that won't matter :)

From a marketing perspective they will never call it 1080 and from that I assume this is fake. The push is now for 4K resolutions and they will never name a GPU for a lesser "resolutions".

Couldn't care less what the reference cooler looks like on cards, would put it under water if I'd get myself a Pascal card, or opt for a custom cooler anyway.
