Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge go 1080P after update

Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge go 1080P after update

Okay it's a bit of a weird title, but as many of you know Samsung started updating and rolling out Android 7.0 Nougat towards the the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The screen on this smart-phone series is 1440 x 2560 pixels. However after the update (users report) the phone starts in a 1080 x 1920 resolution.

It's sounded like a small goof up of some kind, but apparantly it is intentional. Samsung apparantly thinks that running the phone at 1080P will improve battery life. Not a bad idea, but I doubt if you spend 700~800 USD on a phone you expcected a 1080P screen reolution. As an S7 Edge owner myself, heck no. Battery life is fine already + Samung .. you are selling a phone with a native 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution.

If this  happens to you, you can easily fix it by changing towards 1440 x 2560 pixels in your preferences for Nougat:

  1. Open Settings on your Galaxy S7.
  2. Select Display » Screen resolution.
  3. Move the slider to set your preffered display size between HD, FHD and WQHD.
  4. Select APPLY from the top-bar to set your changes.

Pixel definetly produces great results with the camera, I think we are at the point that improvements will be minimal going forward though.

I've not been reading much, but not looking forward to the update now, it's really fugly.
The wife hates it on her G5 as well.

Hopefully the under the hood stuff helps me forget the cosmetics.

We also tested if selecting a lower display resolution (a new feature introduced by Android 7 Nougat) would have a positive impact on the battery life. We compared the battery performance using the native 1440p setting as well as the lowest available setting of 720p.

The short answer is - the change in resolution didn’t affect any aspect of the battery life - not in our testing routine. The minor differences we recorded were in the minutes, and are well within the margin of error of the tests. Perhaps an alternative usage pattern might lead to some meaningful advantages of going low-res, but our experience doesn't point in that direction. One such potential scenario is gaming, but then again you already had the option to limit resolution within Game launcher.
