Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge go 1080P after update

Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge go 1080P after update

Okay it's a bit of a weird title, but as many of you know Samsung started updating and rolling out Android 7.0 Nougat towards the the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The screen on this smart-phone series is 1440 x 2560 pixels. However after the update (users report) the phone starts in a 1080 x 1920 resolution.

It's sounded like a small goof up of some kind, but apparantly it is intentional. Samsung apparantly thinks that running the phone at 1080P will improve battery life. Not a bad idea, but I doubt if you spend 700~800 USD on a phone you expcected a 1080P screen reolution. As an S7 Edge owner myself, heck no. Battery life is fine already + Samung .. you are selling a phone with a native 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution.

If this  happens to you, you can easily fix it by changing towards 1440 x 2560 pixels in your preferences for Nougat:

  1. Open Settings on your Galaxy S7.
  2. Select Display » Screen resolution.
  3. Move the slider to set your preffered display size between HD, FHD and WQHD.
  4. Select APPLY from the top-bar to set your changes.

Personally i like this some games on the Enxos runs less than satisfactory for me so the ability to reduce the res so i can get a solid 60fps is a must for me. Also means when games come out you can reduce res to make them playable rather than just upgrading.

Thing is, in order to have the maximum performance of the phone, you must set it to "High Performance" mode, this disables all throttling of the phone, increases brightness by 10%, and also locks you to WQHD (1440p), so if you are reducing the resolution, you are also having to choose one of the lower power modes aren't you?

I've just tried a game using the recommended 'Optimised' power mode with 1080p, and it ran worse than High Performance @ 1440p

You can customize every performance plan, including "High Performance" mode, you can set resolution and brightness, it's not locked on WQHD. I'm not sure if they change something in the cpu/gpu governors which would explain why the phone runs better in High Perf.

Ah right yea you can customise it from the power plan setting, if you go to display settings > resolution when in high performance mode it greys out the resolution changing option saying it can not be modified while in high performance

Yea pretty sure they throttle the CPU/GPU when not in high performance mode, not sure what 'Gaming mode' does, you'd think it would allow max everything too

Either way, I just set mine to HP with max rez and leave it like that 24/7

Most reports on XDA say the other modes at best give 20-30 mins extra life per full full battery charge, if I'm that desperate for battery life I'll use the power saving modes which are massively more effective 40 hours > 140 hours
