Gabe Newell talks about Cyberpunk 2077 and sympathizes with CD Projekt

Valve's Gabe Newell really doesn't need an introduction; the man Valve, Steam, Half-Life and more spoke about what happened with Cyberpunk 2077, the most anticipated game in recent years.

Newell mentions he believes that such harsh criticism is not fair as it is a very ambitious game. He also thinks that CD Projekt will win back the trust of the players. Of course, you needed to within into this story that that Cyberpunk 2077 is a title selling at steam for 60 EURO, and Valve grabs 30% of the take.

“All I know is that there are a lot of very happy gamers in the PC space, who are the most visible to us (Valve). There are aspects of the game that are simply brilliant and show a tremendous amount of work. It's unfair to throw rocks at the developer because just getting something as complex and ambitious as that is pretty amazing, ”Newell mentioned of Cyberpunk 2077.

Newell added that "they have a long history of doing things right, of continuing to invest in their products for years and I suspect they will do very well to make their customers happy over time."

Also, as promised, CD Projekt RED has released the first major update for Cyberpunk 2077. Patch 1.1 is 1.1GB in size (apparently the Steam patch is 5.4GB, much larger than the GOG patch), it solves some issues with stability, solves mission bugs, and is now available for download. Going into more detail, this update addresses the issue of cache-related startup crashes on NVIDIA graphics cards. It also improves memory usage on various systems within the game. CD Projekt RED will continue this work in patch 1.2 and other upcoming updates detailed in its roadmap. At the same time, we will continue to fix bugs and listen to the community on how to improve the overall game experience.

Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 1.1 Release Notes

Stability

Various stability improvements including:

  • Memory usage improvements in various systems within the game: characters, interactions, navigation, game videos (news, television, etc.), foliage, laser effects, minimap, devices, artificial intelligence, street traffic, system of environmental damage, related to the GPU, and more.
  • Various bug fixes (related, among others, to loading saved games, opening / closing the game, and Point of No Return).

  • Fixed an issue where Delamain's calls would immediately end and appear to be unattended in the Epistrophy mission.
  • Fixed an issue where players were not receiving calls from Delamain when approaching relevant vehicles in Epistrophy mission.
  • Fixed an issue where the target could get stuck on "Answering Mr. Hands's Call" in M'ap Tann Pèlen.

  • Fixed issue responsible for saves becoming oversized (related to modifier indicating if item is manufactured) and removing excess size of already existing saves (note: this will not fix previously corrupted PC save files update 1.06).
  • Fixed an issue where controls could stop registering when opening the weapon wheel and taking an action.
  • Fixed an issue where the "Continue" button in the main menu could load an ending save game.

This extremely defensive post is extremely embarrassing for you. You really, really need to start distancing yourself from corporate products. You are not Cyberpunk 2077. You are not responsible for it being a garbage product created and released under extremely problematic circumstances.

I would like you to point me towards me creating "hate" anywhere in this thread, or anywhere else for that matter, about CP2077. The only thing I've said is that everything about the game is extremely confusing. The marketing is apparently based largely on lies and doesn't at all represent the game that is released. If you can even buy it, because it was deleted from multiple store fronts for being terrible.

Unfortunately it's completely OK to lie in your advertisement about your game, like those ads for mobile games that show graphics and gameplay that doesn't exist. This is what CP2077 seems to be, but because it's a big budget game, people actually care that its advertisement is not representative.
Liking a product because a majority of the community has labeled it "bad" literally just means you like the game, and you're allowed to like or dislike the game. Me personally, I loved the game. For me there were some odd issues but nothing game breaking to me, just like most open world games I get bored of them pretty easy. The only store front that took it down was Sony, and that was digital only. Retailers still sell the physical copy.

So let's no gate keep anyone here, and this not only goes to you but to everyone here. Let's try to be civil, and let's try not to push subjective views as facts.

So logic is that if someone plays the game despite all of these things and enjoys it, the game is still bad? The game being good or bad is subjective, it is the opinion of the person playing it. Someone trying to force the opinion that it is bad because everyone else says it is bad is just as guilty as the folk who defend it because it was a big budget triple AAA release that had a load of hype.

Yes, it can be terribly bad. Even if you enjoyed it. It might be that you enjoyed it ironically - I personally love watching bad B-movies - or it might be that you just aren't in to critical thinking while consuming entertainment. I know several people who are extremely intelligent, but have almost no critical sense when consuming entertainment. I get that "ignorance is bliss" and so on, but I personally set standards higher for my entertainment if I'm to enjoy it in a non-ironic sense. I personally also would take offense at having paid 60€ for a game this unfinished and with the following issues:

The problem here also being that the game was lied about in advertisement - and the staff were put under abusive conditions despite the developer saying previously that they didn't use crunch. So there's a lot of lies here, and the hype train that was built up around this game was just absurd, considering that it's apparently not special in any way what so ever.

Oh it makes total sense now, 'I didn't like it and your to dumb to see you shouldn't like it either'.

Have YOU actually played the game? The response suggests that you haven't and if that is the case then all you are doing is parroting the opinion of others. I would also question why it matters or you feel that those who HAVE enjoyed the game need to be convinced that they have not enjoyed the game or have 'enjoyed it ironically' especially by someone who hasn’t actually played the game.

Is it really that difficult to understand that forming a valid opinion about whether or not one will enjoy a particular game or not does not actually require one to have played it first. Would I need to have played Genshin Impact to validly express an opinion on it? No. Do not like the art style. Do not like the fact it is a gatcha based game. Do not like the play style. Have I played it...no. I have watched other clan members play it...same as viewing a commentary on any particular game. Will have actually playing the game and then expressing that the game was not enjoyed make the opinion any more valid...no. It would lend more weight to it but does not make it more valid. Opinions can be shared about some aspects to a game without actually having played it. Observing a commentary provides enough context. Can the observer share in the same opinion as the commentator about aspects to a game they themselves have not actually played. Why not, actual gameplay had been observed. Instead of playing a demo or free trial, actual gameplay can be observed on twitch and what not.
