FutureMark To Change Name, Brand and Website towards UL
Back in 2014, the company UL purchased and acquired FutureMark. While all benchmarks have been operating under the FutureMark umbrella, a change now will take place.
On April 23, UL will be taking the next step by changing the company name from Futuremark to UL. That also means a change in their websites, which will be located at benchmarks.ul.com, UL is short for Underwrites Laboratories.
Futuremark is rebranding to UL on April 23
Futuremark became part of UL in 2014. UL is an independent, global company with more than 10,000 professionals in 40 countries. UL offers a wide range of testing, inspection, auditing, and certification services and solutions to help customers, purchasers and policymakers manage risk and complexity in modern markets. What does this mean for 3DMark and your other benchmarks?
We are changing our company name from Futuremark to UL. Our benchmark brands, such as 3DMark, PCMark, and VRMark, are not affected. We will continue to develop new benchmark tests while supporting our existing products. What will happen to the Futuremark website?
On April 23, we will close futuremark.com. All future visits will be redirected to the equivalent page on benchmarks.ul.com.I follow your news on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. What will happen with that?
You will not need to take any action to continue following our news. On April 23, we will rebrand our social media accounts. From that point on, our posts will come from "UL Benchmarks" rather than "Futuremark."

That's what I said on the first page. If you want to broaden your company's product portfolio to an area that's already full of competition, it can be much easier to buy an existing operator with a strong presence there than try to start from scratch, assuming you have the dough.

My point was, just because "couple of gamers" dont know UL, doesn't mean the rest of the world doesn't know them either.
Even that i grew up in Germany (GS) i knew about UL at least 2 decades before the first MO/FM benchmark was released, as almost all electronics in Europe would also be sold in the US (and the other way around) and would carry GS and UL stamps, not even talking about wires sold in bulk...

Does it really matter? How many of people who bought FM give a damn about UL?
And from other side, how many of UL following people will buy FM because UL got it?
UL got additional coverage which is as important as non-existent as it will not bring large crowd of clients. (If there is to be gain, then there much be economical cross section between group of UL and group of FM.)
Then there is our Western world where UL and similar companies play important role, but end customer does not even have to care. because we have all those regulations and as long as you buy from legitimate shop (or good brands), they will be selling products which passed QC.
It's almost as if General Motors bought some popular chewing gum brand. (hyperbole)
Futuremark was nothing but a company name. When most people buy software, they buy based on the product name and not the company name. Hell, I know people who have sat in front of computers for over 30 years that still don't know the name of the company that develops Windows, Office or Internet Explorer.... That's how little the name of a company actually matters. If people want the product, they don't worry what the name of the company is. They care that they recognize the product itself.

@Fox2232
the ratio in the gamer community might be better, but the total number will be lower than compared to UL.
if 99% of all gamers (about 1.2B) would know FM, its still way less than how many ppl in manufacturing countries like china/japan would know UL.
just the fact that china has a population around 1.4B , and i guarantee most of their workers will know about UL but not about FM....
