That's a bit of an 'ooops' from Microsoft.  PC World has an interesting article about the crusade of a consumer watchdog group against companies that are charging a fee for their supposed "free upgrade" to Windows 7. The fee, which has been as high as $17, is labeled as shipping, handling, and fulfillment fees.

Consumers who purchase an eligible PC between June 26, 2009 and Jan. 31, 2010 qualify for the upgrade. Dworsky, however, found that while some computer makers are giving away Windows 7 upgrades, others are charging fees as high as $17 for what's characterized as "shipping, handling, and fulfillment fees." "The problem is that a lot of this information is hidden, or impossible to find," said Dworsky today. "Disclose it, let the consumer know." more here.

In other microsoft related news Microsoft's Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 Professional or higher has RTM'd (Release to Manufacturing) today and will be available for download from Microsoft Download Center on October 22. OEM manufactures will be able to offer Windows XP Mode on their PC's, based on their shipping schedules to consumers.
