Forspoken implements Microsoft's DirectStorage API, offers faster load times but lowers frame rate

The test results show that while NVMe SSDs resulted in shorter load times, the frame rate was approximately 10% lower compared to a SATA SSD.  Forspoken, has made headlines as the first game to implement Microsoft's DirectStorage API. 



This technology allows for the use of NVMe SSDs to improve loading times in games. However, recent tests have shown that there may be some drawbacks to this implementation. According to PC Games Hardware, tests using different types of SSDs with the built-in benchmark of the game at 4k resolution showed that while PCIe 3.0 and 4.0-based drives did offer shorter load times, the frame rate was also about 10% lower compared to a SATA SSD (about 75 fps vs. 83 fps). The 1% and 0.2% lows (minimum fps) remained unchanged. The tests were conducted using Windows 11, an Intel Core i9-12900K, and an Nvidia RTX 4090. It remains to be seen how the results may differ when adjusting settings such as resolution or using less powerful hardware. Moreover, it is unknown which SSDs were used in the benchmarks.
