Flight Simulator patch should improve performance

Microsoft FlightSim 2020 has been a bit of a sore ever since release, many bottlenecks in the Full HD and Quad HD resolution really limit graphics performance. Good news though, a new patch should improve on some very specific situations.

The system has been optimized to shorten loading times, images from certain airports have to burden the CPU less and there are memory optimisations, which in particular should benefit systems with relatively little memory.

  • Tweaked CPU thread priorities to reduce interruption of frame critical threads.
  • Optimized loading system to reduce overall loading times.
  • Optimized heavy airport scenes impact on CPU.
  • Reduced the amount of GPU overdraw to improve GPU performance.
  • Memory optimizations to reduce software memory footprint and improve performance on memory limited computers.
  • Overall performance optimizations.

In addition, the developer has changed CPU thread prioritization, GPU performance should be improved. Players will also be able to manage the frequency of cockpit screen updates after the patch is implemented. The patch also changes some visual characteristics of the cockpits of a few planes and long bridges should show fewer gaps.

Once things settle down we'll investigate if the current graphics performance charts will need an update.
