First AMD Ryzen Shipment Batch Entails One Million Processors
March 2nd AMD will launch their Ryzen processors. In the initial launch wave you will spot the Ryzen 7 1700, Ryzen 7 1700X and Ryzen 7 1800X. According to Digitimes the first release wave would already entail one million shipped processors.
That number would be based on the accumulation of all three released models, Digitimes did not include a source for this information. If true then there will be a good amount of processors available at launch and with proper volume available, this means you will not see inflated prices. This will be a proper hard launch:
AMD will start selling its new Ryzen processors in early March with an initial shipment target expected to top one million units.
AMD's Ryzen processors are manufactured by Globalfoundries's 14nm FinFET process and AMD is expected to release models including 1800X, 1700X and 1700, priced at US$499, US$399 and US$329, respectively.
Motherboard players have already planned over 80 new motherboards based on AMD's new X370 and B350 chipsets and these players are expected to ship nearly one million units initially.
AMD will also release three chipsets for these CPUs: X370, B350 and A320. MSI has designed 15 new motherboards using these chipsets, while Asustek Computer has 10-11, but Asustek is expected to have the largest shipment volume.
AMD CEO Lisa Su also pointed out that the company will also release its next-generation Vega series GPUs, next-generation server processors codenamed Naples, Ryzen processors for notebooks and Radeon Instinct card targeting deep learning applications.

I'm about to build a new PC for my son. I think one of these RyZen setups will do very nicely indeed. If these perform as good as initial leaks, then this is going to be a win win for everyone (except Intel, this is)

I wonder if the notebook parts will be able to match intel's low power consumption.

That seems like a reasonable number.
Processor prices are also really fair here - there's a tiny premium on the 499$ price (after including danish VAT of 25%), but it's not RX 480 levels of price inflation or anything like that.
