EVGA Launches 3199 euro SC17 Gaming Notebook

EVGA Launches 3199 euro SC17 Gaming Notebook

Blimey for that kind of money it better make a nice cappuccino as well. EVGA announced its SC17-laptop, it comes with an overclockable quadcore-cpu, GTX 980M-gpu and 32GB DDR4 memory. Earlier presented at CES the price now is announced as well, 3199 EURO.

For that money the laptop is fitted with a Intel Core i7-6820HK, this processor has a base clock frequency of 2.7 GHz but can be OCed to 3.8 GHz thanks to an unlocked multiplier. The screen is Ultra HD, but then the graphics card is only an Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M tied towards 8GB gddr5. In the BIOS you can tweak, yet there are also pre-configured profiles you can choose from. If anything goes wrong, you can hit a button and reset to defaults (clear CMOS).

Key Features:

  • Unibody Design - A sleek design and thin 1.05in thickness means this is one of the sleekest laptops around.
  • 4K UHD Display - A Sharp IPS display capable of delivering up to 4K resolution for crystal clear graphics.
  • Incredible Hardware - EVGA is known for performance hardware, and the EVGA SC17 laptop is no exception. An Intel Core i7 6820HK Unlocked processor combined with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M graphics gives you unbelievable performance in the latest games.
  • Built to Overclock - Overclocking on a laptop? Seems like a myth, but we have nothing to hide here. A full GUI BIOS with full control over CPU Multipliers, Voltage, Memory Timings, Frequency, even GPU overclocking right inside the BIOS. It also ships with EVGA PrecisionX mobile for complete control in Windows also!
  • BIOS - The EVGA SC17 Gaming Laptop ships with a REAL BIOS. This means full GUI support including mouse, complete control over all overclocking features such as CPU.
  • EOC (EVGA Express OC) - Overclocking at your fingertips, overclock on the fly with up/down arrow keys allowing you to enable Superclocked performance, or downclock mode to improve battery life. Also cycle through preset overclocks to find the best performance for the situation.
  • EVGA PrecisionX Mobile - The power of EVGA PrecisionX, now mobile with EVGA PrecisionX Mobile. Tweak your overclock settings, overclock hotkeys, profiles and CPU overclocking right at your fingertips. EVGA PrecisionX mobile can even enable/disable laptop backlighting and keyboard lighting!

The SC17 Gaming Notebook can be purchased now in pre-order, with delivery in April.  Currently for the Eu there are only French and German keyboard versions, UK model will follow. EVGA did not share any info regarding the cooling system / noise levels and battery / battery life.

The price of this overclockable laptop as stated is 3199 euro, for 1000 euro less you can get the equivalent from Alienware. And comparable MSI versions will be half that money, though will not have a uni-body. Personally I fail to see why anyone would spend an extra 1000~1500 EURO for a mild overclock on a laptop?

Just a single 980M? Why not a 980 or two? Or at least two 980Ms in SLI? A really odd choice, especially considering the price point.

Now you can massively overclock a notebook for even more throttling! Yay, for only €1000 more than the competition!

This is why we don't buy prebuilt.

Not that convinced that the cooling system will be any good considering it's a slim laptop. If they want to market it as overclockable then it would be better suited to a more beefy laptop with better cooling system. I do like the idea that they've not locked down the BIOS though & the fact that you can tweak in the BIOS - that's very refreshing! You can overclock laptops anyway, it's nothing new. Too expensive this laptop, plus old tech now with Pascal on the doorstep.

Really the only reason for a laptop is you can carry it. This is not light! Seriously buy a desktop and a car, I would bring my cosmos case to work before I spent 3k on a laptop for less than half the power.
