EA made a bit of a mistake in Battlefield V they accidentally named a German soldier after a real-life resistance hero. The character name has been changed.

In Battlefield V you can purchase the Wilhelm Franke character to compete against others online. The character shares the name Wilhelm Franke with a German resistance hero. The man had a cigar shop in Dresden which was a secret meeting place for the SPD, a political party that opposed Adolf Hitler in the 1930s and 1940s. The party was banned during that period. In 1945, Franke died of air strikes.

"We have discovered that one of the elites in our game, Wilhelm Franke, shares a name with a member of the resistance from Germany during the Second World War," writes Battlefield publisher EA in a statement owned by Vice. "We want to apologize for this. We didn't want to be irreverent in any way. The name is being changed in the game."

EA denies that the Franke in the game is a Nazi. "He is just a German soldier," says the publisher. "We do not make political statements about the Second World War in the game and we do not show swastikas."

The character of the game was shown in a trailer as a ruthless character who executed allies with a gun. He also had one opponent bleed to death on the ground. In addition, the character carries the Iron Cross, a military award that has not been awarded since the Second World War.
