DRAM Prices Might Go Up Again As MIcron Plant Has Issues

DRAM Prices Might Go Up Again As MIcron Plant Has Issues

One out of the two Micron's DRAM plants is out of production after they had to close it down after a nitrogen gas dispensing system. That malfunction contaminated equipment and wafer production. The plat is responsive for nearly 6% of the world market production of DRAM.

As long as the plat remains out of action, there will be disturbance in the force, pardon the pun. And that would be demand versys supply and thus prices. DRAM prices already have been under a lot of stress due to high-demand and low production, priced have nearly double since a year ago.

This new incident certainly is not going to help. The DRAMeXchange estimates that Micron Technology Taiwan, also known as Inotera, is missing around 60,000 wafer starts per month as a result of all this. And that is a conservative estimate. Micron's Inotera factory DRAM is used in products for PCs, servers and mobile devices.

Above a year spread price on for example a Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4-3200 CL14 kit

Inotera is "mainly responsible for manufacturing Micron’s LPDDR4 products that go into Apple’s supply chain for iPhone" as they state though. That menas it could even have an effect on the upcoming iPhone 8 launch window and availability. Micron should have Fab-2 up and running at full capacity again ASAP.

Who needs plants when the prise is going up? Lets hope its not another prise fixing scam from the industry, as in many other fields.

I bought a 32GB DDR4 3000mhz Kingston HyperX Savage RAM kit about a year and a half ago for £179.99.

Here is the same RAM kit now and its current price: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/kingston-savage-black-32gb-4x8gb-ddr4-pc4-24000c15-3000mhz-quad-channel-kit-hx430c15sb2k4-32-my-247-ks.html

I spent £285 on 4133mhz TridentZ because you don't scrimp and save on the motherboard or ram in any case.

At this point both AMD and Intel should step in. This is going to hurt both of them. Honestly current DDR$ prices are keeping me from jumping to a new system. If the prices go up more I know I will be putting off core upgrade for possibly another year.

Step in and do what? Keep in mind that Micron and Intel have a joint venture called IMFT.

Did anyone read the article? This plant issue affects LPDDR4, which is used in phones.
