Could you please provide a citation or some evidence for that claim? Reading around on the Doom9 forum, several posts by different users say that FSE must be enabled in MadVR to get 10bpc output*. If you wish to contradict them, you might want to provide evidence. Admittedly they don't mention disabling FSO, but I disable it for ALL graphically intensive applications that run in fullscreen as a standard procedure because on my hardware I get to decide which apps are fullscreen-exclusive and which are borderless windowed, not microsoft.
* For example this one: https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=172128
you don't require FSE nor do you need to disable FSO for madvr to automatically move to 10b

I pay no attention to what end users say about anything when they misconfigure their pcs
Windows 10 + Madvr will make use of the formers Direct Scan-out capabiliy and configure the depth of the screen directly, originally reported as a bug but it is intended and expected behavior.
http://bugs.madshi.net/view.php?id=631
FWIW, Windows 10 has a special mode called "direct scanout", which is automatically activated by the OS and GPU driver in fullscreen windowed mode. The OS and GPU driver do this directly, practically behind the back of madVR. Which is normally fine, because this mode improves performance to near FSE levels. Plus it allows 10bit output in fullscreen windowed mode.
My best guess is that this "direct scanout" mode is somehow causing these issues for you. There's not much I can do about that, unfortunately.
Not sure why uninstalling and reinstalling madVR would fix that, though. That seems weird.

The bit in bold is correct only if HDR is enabled in windows settings. If the desktop and display are in SDR mode (and are not automatically put into HDR mode by playing a HDR video) then it will not work AFAIK.
Comments at your link back this up:
- the "switch" only occurs if HDR is enabled in Windows display settings (OD HDR) and "output video in HDR" is disabled in MadVR
- If I disable OS HDR and enable "output in HDR" in MadVR (NV HDR), there also is no switch when going fullscreen (but one when the player starts, obviously). However, the image quality is bad in this NV HDR mode (way too dark)

Your quote is not from madshi or about direct scanouts function, its a description of an issue one of the users is experiencing despite the state of the FSE checkbox being off.
It's also possible that it only occurs when using D3D11 presentation or when using 10bit output. You could try disabling D3D11 presentation or force 8bit output instead.
is the only supposition on direct scanouts behavior.

im sure madshi is already communicating with nvidia about whatever issue is occuring if not already working around it.
