Diablo IV Confirmed as Online-Only

Diablo IV Confirmed as Online-Only

Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 4 will not have an offline mode. Speaking during a panel held at BlizzCon 2019, lead designer Angela Del Priore addressed a question about whether the game can be played solo and whether it will support "a full offline mode."

"We are not going to support an offline mode," Del Priore replied. "But as I said before, nothing in DIablo 4 is going to require partying up. You can play solo and dungeons are private. Campain quest areas will [also] remain private."

So although you will need an internet connection for the game to work, you can still play solo if you don’t want to group up with people. Players who are already familiar with the franchise likely won’t be bothered by this, as the exact same structure has been in place in Diablo 3 for seven years. However, newcomers may not be aware of the fact that online play isn’t mutually exclusive from solo play, and may be deterred from playing if that isn’t made explicitly clear.

Path of Exile is always online (drm) and have mtx sale messages popping up while playing, but then again it's free to play, though I don't like any form of drm.

Heck they even went so far as to having several "shop" buttons in the game hud and menu, where you simply can't hide from all of that nonsense.

I don't want to write Diablo IV off just because it's always online (drm), but it's sad to hear that Activision Blizzard haven't learned anything from feedback.

Well poe has a shop button on the interface but is not intrusive at all , and to their credit poe might be the only online game that never sold xp boosters/ drop chance boosters / any items that are anything else but pure cosmetic .....the pay to win factor in it is literally 0% , although I would argue few premium tabs and a currency tab provide quality of life that i can not see my self playing with out but by any means it does not hinder your ability to play the game and go toe toe with the rest of the players , the game you can play for free without any penalty or punishment to you because you did not open your wallet and eventually you will figure out if you like it enough to stick around or leave. Personally i play since close beta 2011 i think it was , and so far i spend about 60 euros on it with the hours i logged so far in this game i feel like i am cheating grinding gear games :p

They played like that even on d2 prime it was always the case.

I mean, it's pretty obvious as to why it's going to be online-only; it's the only tried and true way to keep piracy waaaaay, way down as the only way to pirate it is to emulate the server functionality. If I remember correctly, it took 1-2 years before diablo 3 had an emulated server to make it playable for free, and the process to set it up was of course too much for most average folk.

Beyond that it's also a great way to stem down cheating as decision making happens server side instead of client. Even beyond all this, It's always kinda shocked me blizz went this route when the server management is also more dosh needing to be spent, and if they ever go poof, well there goes the game as well...
