Destiny Makes $500 Million in First 24 Hours
Ok, not bad, not bad at all. Activision announced that Destiny has made $500 million in sales in its first 24 hours of release. This makes it the biggest video game launch ever. Suddenly, Activision's investment of $500 million into the Destiny franchise doesn't sound so bizarre.
"Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny," said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. "This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world. The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment's Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up."
"Since the beginning, we've been confident that our investment and belief in Destiny would pay off. But not many people believed we'd be able to say it did so on day one," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "Destiny is officially the biggest new franchise launch in our industry's history. It's also the highest-selling day one digital console release in history. We have more confidence than ever that Destiny will become one of the iconic franchises of this generation and Activision's next billion dollar brand. Most importantly, it's just a great game which we can't stop playing. A big thanks to our incredibly talented team and partners who helped make this happen; most importantly, our partners at Bungie."

Might be so but it was done with whole lot less advertisement GTA actual had next to none in compression and it sold more.
Do enough advertisement and anything will sell, even if it a turd. Not say destiny is bad i just saying would it of sold the same amount if it didnt have all the advertisements? same for halo and cod?

It a Shooter/FPS that is why it sold like hot cakes
From what I've been reading, its also due to the fact that everyone and their dog that purchased a console was counting on this game to be THE title to get to justify their console purchase.
For some, they will enjoy the game and it will be worth it. For the rest, its not at all. I've read many complaints, particularly from people who have purchased the collectors edition to find that the extra cost didn't provide what they were hoping it would.
I haven't yet played the game so I can't comment on whether its good or not, but there is no question that it was way way way overhyped and to me it seems like Bungie was a victim of their own hype, which would explain why there were no reviews prior to the game's release, which is not typical.

The game has so many elements ripped from Halo. I know they created it but it makes it far from original. The gameplay is repetitive and will get boring fast.

True, said marketting is succesful though.
IMHO, I don't have the slightest interest in playing this game. A new IP that sounds no different from borderlands.... I'm not understanding the interest.
Compare it to another blockbuster: I was in line to buy GTA 5, because GTA has been with me since childhood (was a teenager for GTA3 and was playing 1-2 and London 1969 prior.)
It could not be more different from Borderlands. Do me a favor and do some research before you voice your opinion next time.
Destiny is high-end garbage. I cannot believe how many gamers are playing this and then realizing they made a mistake lol. The content is hardly there, the PvP is ****ing horrid, etc. VERY limited content for a supposed MMO type game.
Also, they didn't spend 500m making this. I'm so tired of ridiculous press releases and **** like this. Does this look anywhere like a 500m game lol? Look at how ****ing dead the world is?
500m was a total investment in everything. Sequels etc. This game looks like it was made for no more than 40m dollars at most. The script is horrid, the characters are not there. Most of it had to be coding a new engine or something cuz this don't even look like a 100m game in the end. Marketing prolly ate up 3/4 of that budget.
Maybe you should check the console thread here on guru, vast majority of those who got the game really like it. LOL.
LOL.

Those people need to learn to read. I'm pretty sure the collector's edition extras were listed black on white. Like with every other game.

It should be noted that it was 500 million worth of copies sold to retailers, not to customers, GTAV sold 800 million worth of copies to customers in 2 days.
