Sony, in a fiscal call told that the release of the PlayStation 5 is still on planned at the end of the year. The company says it sees the consequences of the travel restrictions on the development of the hardware, but according to the manufacturer, these can be overcome.

According to a recent earnings report from the company, it is still expecting the console to arrive on its scheduled 'Holiday' 2020' release date. Although the development of the hardware has encountered problems because employees have to work from home and are not allowed to travel, solutions have now been found.

'Regarding the launch of PlayStation 5, although factors such as employees working from home and restrictions on international travel have presented some challenges in regards to part of the testing process and the qualification of production lines, development is progressing with the launch of the console scheduled for the 2020 holiday season,' the company said in a statement. 'At this point in time major problems have not arisen in the game software development pipeline for Sony’s own first-party studios or its partners’ studios,' Sony said.

Previous reports have suggested that COVID-19 could lead to a shortage of materials required to produce the PlayStation 5 and result in a limited stock. Sony's biggest rival in the console market, Microsoft has also brushed off potential issues with distribution in recent interviews, saying that its next-gen Xbox Series X will be delivered on time. Expectations for other divisions are even lower and Sony expects the electronics division, in particular, to be hit hard next year. In that business unit, the past year had not gone well with smartphones and TVs; sales of both product groups fell sharply, even before the outbreak of the corona virus.
