Dell SE2717H FHD with IPS and FreeSync

Dell outs a new Full HD screen, IPS based. The bezels are nicely thin and it comes with OSD control buttons to the left. The curved VA panel has been replaced by a flat IPS-type panel, with a 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) resolution and matte anti-glare finish to the screen surface.

The Dell Dell SE2717H is specced with a 1000:1 static contrast, 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles and 6-bit + FRC colour processing. The refresh rate is 48 – 75Hz variable, with Adaptive-Sync/FreeSync. A 6ms grey to grey response time is specified.

Dell SE2717H Specifications:

  • Display Size: 27 Inches
  • Aspect Ratio: (16:9)
  • Backlight Technology: LED
  • Display Screen Coating: Antiglare with 3H hardness
  • Panel Type: In-Plane switching Technology
  • Panel Bits: 6-bits + FRC panel
  • Maximum Resolution: 1920 x 1080
  • Viewing Angle: 178° vertical / 178° horizontal
  • Contrast Ratio: 1000: 1 (typical), 8 Million: 1 (Dynamic)
  • Pixel Pitch: 0.3114 mm
  • Pixel Per Inch (PPI): 82
  • Brightness: 300 cd/m2 (typical)
  • Response Time: 6ms (gray to gray)
  • Free Sync support frame frequency: Yes, 48-75Hz
  • Color Support:
    • Color Gamut (typical): 84% (CIE 1976), 72% (CIE 1931)
    • Color Depth: 16.7 Million colors
  • Narrow Bezel (Edge of Monitor to Edge of viewable screen) 11mm
  • Stand
    • Tilt (-5° to 21°)
    • Built in cable-management

The stand only offers tilt adjustment and attaches towards the bottom of the monitor. There are no VESA holes. Inputs are HDMI 1.4a (with Adaptive-Sync) and VGA. Pricing is really cheap at $249.

60Hz seems a bit low these days for 1920x1080 though I guess IPS still isn't quite there yet for reliable 120hz let alone higher (If that even exists outside of marketing terms where it goes up to sometimes above 240 and then it's 60hz with some motion thingie.) although apparently some monitors can be tweaked a bit to go above the 60hz limit from what I've read at least.

FreeSync might be useful though 48 - 75 also seems a bit low albeit at 1080p I guess with a decent GPU keeping framerate between 50 - 60 is doable while keeping the adaptive-sync benefit. :)

No idea how FRC is, don't really have any in-depth knowledge on that although I thought most monitors today were 8-bit or 8+2 for 10-bit though I guess there is 6 and 6+2 too then.

Oh and the usual minor typo point-out "Hull HD" :P
(Not that it makes much of a difference, unless you stop and look at each word individually the brain will usually just make it so you read it out as what you expected it to be, I think there were some tests on that switching a few letters around with each word in a shorter text but it's still perfectly readable, eh not like that matters.)

EDIT: Looks like the usual contrast and response time fluff is there too with measurements from gray - gray instead of black - white or what it was but eh that's on every monitor and TV.
(Also I missed that the price was listed, I guess that explains some of the lower specs or well I guess overall it's a fairly solid 1080p IPS monitor really.)

:( Low res for 27" and only 60hz...

I mean, I'd be fine with 60hz, but the low resolution is a dealbreaker imo. You can hardly buy a graphicscard these days that doesn't do 60fps at 1080p.

For this price it's a very good deal. Throw in some Freesync and it screams value for money. I will say that the resolution is a bit low for the size, but at that price there is nothing to complain.

Its 75Hz by the way. Some people can't read.

Also it uses a VA panel, which is actually not a type of IPS.
VA has excellent contrast ratio and no IPS glow.
On the downside they have lower color production and accuracy (but still much better than TN) VA runs hot, sucks more power and not as durable as IPS panels. The biggest deal breaker for VA monitor panels are that they suffer from poor response times and ghosting.

So this low PPI 1080p product is actually closer to a TV screen than monitor. Great if you want to sit back and watch videos in a dark room, but the last thing you want for competitive play.

Good price for a general use Freesync capable 75Hz panel.
