For this edition of the eternal quest in seeking good prices on hardware, I figured we'd take a look at some DDR2 and DDR3 memory. Memory is of course key to a speedy system. have too little, and your HDD will start swapping.
Remember, on a 32-bit OS, you shouldn't go past 3 GB of memory. With 64-bit operating systems 4GB is my recommendation, and with a triple channel memory PC (Core i7) heck .. just go for 6 GB folks. Memory is dirt cheap !
DDR2 memory:
- 4GB OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz Blade Series (Dual Channel) - check it out, at 800 MHz Blade kit ! It comes with the fancy black heat spreaders and at 800 MHz it runs at CAS 4-4-4-15 - we found an uber-good-deal for this kit selling at $36.99 (!).
- 4GB OCZ 1066MHz PC2-8500 Gold Edition (Dual channel) - Awesome kit that can run 1066 MHz and prolly a little extra. Comes with heat spreader and has sweet 5-6-6-18 timings ! we spotted it at $48.99 for the full 4 GB. That's 12 bucks a gig, crazy when you think about it.
DDR3 memory
- 4GB Crucial DDR3 PC3-10600 - DDR3 memory is still slightly more expensive than DDR2. But check it out, this 4 GB kit (2x2GB) at DDR3 1333 MHz is selling at $57.99
- 6GB Patriot Memory Extreme Performance Viper Series - Patriot is up and coming in the value segment. Check it out this triple channel memory kit, 6GB PC3-10666 DDR3 1333 3 x 2GB Intel XMP Ready memory at CL9, this kit is selling for $75.99 and that's 13 bucks per GB. Absolutely an interesting kit.
The deal of the day ... you just can't beat this kit in price and performance.
- OCZ Gold 6GB PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 - Aaah, sweet kit ! Nice heat spreaders, it runs low-voltage at 1600 Mhz (which I consider to be a nice sweet spot of triple channel configurations) and check it out .. 8-8-8-24 timings. The price is really good at $79.99
