Crypto miners paint GDDR memory chips to hide wear & make them look better

Cryptocurrency miners are turning to creative solutions to sell their remaining inventory of GPUs as the business of crypto mining becomes less profitable.

According to reports, miners are using thermal paint to hide the wear and tear on their GPU components, such as the die or GDDR memory, which can overheat and produce visual signs of damage, such as discoloration or melting.

Iskandar Souza and TecLab have uncovered these practices, and are warning third-party buyers to be cautious before making a purchase. Some miners are even going as far as resoldering failed GPU dies back in place and attempting to make the chips look like new. The use of thermal paint and resoldering is a deceptive practice and miners are being warned to be careful as this could lead to legal repercussions.

And that's why the second hand market should be avoided for the next 5-10 years.

Without even knowing that, I avoided buying a GPU from that market. I was scammed once, before crypto craze, don't want the same experience for a second time.

I haven't bought a used GPU (or any component) in about 7-8 years now (last was a 780Ti). Between crypto abuse and price gouging, that entire, compellingly priced part of the market dried up. The new market is also rubbi$h.

I truly despise people who lack integrity and are willing to scam others. Not really a shocker that this is the route that people into a scam like crypto would take.
