Corsair K100 has a weird bug: types words on its own

Several Corsair K100 owners have complained that the mechanical keyboard sometimes produces text on its own. Sometimes it might be words the user had typed some days prior.

There have been reports of strange behaviour from several users on the corsair help forum. A keylogger is initially being blamed by some users for the issue. Typically, such software is employed for shady ends, such as stealing passwords and other sensitive information before being processed and encrypted.

"Every couple of days, the keyboard has started randomly typing on its own while I am working on the MacBook. It usually seems to type messages that I previously typed on the gaming PC and it won't stop until I unplug the keyboard and plug it back in," the user, "brendenguy," wrote.

However, Corsair has assured customers that the issue is not a keylogger but rather a software flaw in the keyboard itself. Issues with and malfunctions of the macro recording feature are to be expected. A firmware upgrade should resolve the issue.

"Corsair keyboards unequivocally do not log user input in any way and do not have the ability to log individual keystrokes," Corsair's rep stated.

"The macro function could be inadvertently switching on and recording keyboard, and potentially mouse, inputs. These macros are then being triggered and reproducing inputs at a later time and misinterpreted as keylogging. We’re still investigating the precise nature of the issue with our customers.," Corsair's spokesperson said.

They further emphasised that the problem is not common, saying that out of "tens of thousands" of K100 purchases, there had only been a "limited number" of complaints. The manufacturer, though, is currently looking into the matter.
