Can the ASUS ROG Strix RX 6800 XT boost beyond 2500 MHz?

Can the ASUS ROG Strix RX 6800 XT boost beyond 2500 MHz?

The announcements for AMD's Big Navi RDNA2 based graphics cards is getting closer. And we can see chatter and noise build up on the web alright. Today an alleged sample(s) of Asus ROG Strix RX 6800 (XT) variants would be able to achieve high clock speeds in 3dmark 11.

3Dmark 11 is of course massively outdated and thus not even the slightest bit GPU limited. In such a situation your GPU frequency can go up significantly. That said; Twitterer Patrick Schur informs us about engineering samples with a total graphics power of 290 W and one with 255 W.

The video card with a tgp of 255 W shows clock speeds in the two results with a midpoint approximately at 2,350 MHz and boost peaks to 2,557 MHz. Average clock speeds would fluctuate dramatically due to driver issues. One test result shows an average clock speed of almost 2,300 MHz, with the other result the average is less than 2,000 MHz.

The tested video card with a tgp of 290 W shows comparable results. With three benchmark rounds, the median is between 2,300 MHz and 2,370 MHz and a boost outlier of 2,556 MHz has been recorded. The average clock speeds were between 2090 MHz and 2290 MHz.

Had to wait awhile but at least now there will be competition for Nvidia across the stack. Those clock speeds with any refinement for the next 7000 series could be quite something

Just two more days for the announcement. Hopefully, availability and reviews won't be too long after.

If AMD revives the ATI brand like in the olden days, it could probably place back AMD RADEON ATI back on being the market leader.
Anyways the AMD 6800XT ,6700XT and even 6900XT if they are refined are going to hurt NVIDIA big time, if availibility is there, plus big performance in rasterisation.
The only thing missing is that sweet Ray Traycing and IA stuff that AMD might have under the table still hidden to compete against NVIDIA.

Clocks are free performance for the manufacturer, as long as the power consumption (heat generation) allows it. It's how Intel, using the dusty old Core architecture, could keep beating AMD's modern Zen architecture for so long, at least in games. It's kind of interesting that Nvidia, for now, seems to have abandoned the clocks approach and instead chose to make bigger chips. Perhaps it's thanks to being able to sell the card, no matter how expensive they are. AMD is the underdog, struggling to sell GPUs, so if they can match the competition through the power of high clocks, it's a huge win for AMD, allowing them to make profit despite less units sold.

fyi the AMD cards will have roughly the same amount of watts than the Nvidias so don't expect "magically" cooler cards amd talks about gpu only watts not total watts like nvidia (more honest) does the 6900xt is rumoured to be 355 watts overall
(my current 1080ti reaches 320+ watts quite often so I know how it's like)

another of the weird things you see in PC hardware world but that doesn't exist in the car world : people expect more power for less consumption, it's not happening
Linus even has to make a video saying "you won't be able to put a 3090 in a small form factor"
...noooo you think ? user who can easily see 840+ watts @PSU on his own PC and has upgraded in less than one year from 1x360mm rad to 2x then 3x >< (rule of thumb for custom loop is easy under load liquid shouldn't be higher than 35°C or as close as you can, at idle should be <30°C that way your idle stays close to room temp and under load it won't abusively heat your room, 40°C+ is a failure rethink your loop or go air cooling it's not working properly)
