Biostar GAMING Z97X and Z97W Motherboards

Biostar GAMING Z97X and Z97W Motherboards

Wow, amazing how many component manufacturers out there steal the naming from MSI, Anyway BioStar announced its latest flagship socket LGA1150 motherboard, the GAMING Z97X. A nice looking board series though.

The board design is brown/gold+black color scheme and comes with a black plastic shroud.

Expansion slots wise you will get three PCI-Express 3.0 x16 (x16/NC/NC or x8/x8/NC or x8/x4/x4); and three PCI-Express 2.0 x1. Storage is based on six SATA 6 Gb/s, and one M.2 slot. The board is SATA Express compatible, but that connector seems to be doomed even before it peaked. The board is based on a 12-phase VRM power design. Nice to see are USB 3.1 ports these run 10 Gb/s, it has six regular USB 3.0 ports

You get two NICs, one Intel and one Killer E2200. BioStar includes a 5.25-inch "Gaming Commander," which gives you front-panel audio outputs with a volume control, amplifier control, diagnostic LEDs, and a CPU temperature indicator. A bit gimmicky but well ..

On-board you will find a diagnostic LED, power on/reset and OC buttons. The GAMING Z97W seems to be the more budget friendly version, is lacks a third PCIe x16 slot, has a 10-phase CPU VRM and has minor other changes.

While I like the black PCB of the board however the rest of the color design needs work.

Biostar always had some issues with design. Also whenever I hear "Biostar" I hear "low quality VRM's."
