Backbone router setup mistake caused worldwide Facebook outage
Around 11:50 p.m. CEST on Monday, Facebook's global outage was mostly resolved. After over six hours, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger are back online. The failure was caused by an improper update setting, the company claims.
During the downtime, almost 3.5 billion users lost access to their data. By Monday night, Facebook's services had gradually returned. Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp are now working for most. The apps may still be unreliable in the future due to simultaneous connections from several devices. Around 4 a.m., WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart announced on Twitter that everyone could use the service again.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized via Facebook. "Sorry for any inconvenience today, because I know how much you rely on us to keep in touch with the people you care about."
Facebook said the incident occurred while updating its systems. Facebook's router system has a bug that prevented servers from communicating. "We suspect the reason of the outage was a bad configuration," the business claimed. Facebook says it has no indications that data has also been leaked due to the outage. The problems also prevented employees from accessing the internal systems.

Is WhatsApp technically superior to other messengers like Viber, Telegram, Skype?
To me the messenger which goes down because of one or two servers is badly designed.

Facebook and social media are not cancer or some evil devices that make the world worse, they are just a reflex of our current society...
And i can say this without any problem because i don“t use any social media, maybe with the exception of Guru3d!

Society is superficial, but those tendencies only get worse when there are means for it, so in a way, social media is really bad thing. You cannot rely on people obeying the notion it is bad, they will continue to use it, if you remove the thing entirely then they will stop using it. If you don't want people to do something, remove any means for them to do it. That doesn't mean that social media websites and apps don't have any positives or any useful functions, but in general they are doing much more harm than good.

I like FB in the sense it allows me to connect to long lost friends from my childhood. Also can serve as a useful complaint vehicle against certain businesses, governmental agencies, law enforcement, etc, that can be embarassing to them if or when they fck up. Dont like the politicization of it by agenda-driven groups or individuals that spread BS, fake news or general nonsensical drivel that target unaware ppl who believe anything they see on the internet.

I don't mind it being down but whatsapp is like the #1 way to communicate with people now.
Actually had to endure an hour long call with my gf instead of ignoring her, yikes.
Plox, Guru3D is the #1 way to communicate with people
Not a fan of Facebook or Instagram, but WhatsApp is a really good app, imo. I rarely have to top-up my phone credit.
Agreed and that's because WhatsApp has nothing to do with stinkin' social media.
