Backbone router setup mistake caused worldwide Facebook outage
Around 11:50 p.m. CEST on Monday, Facebook's global outage was mostly resolved. After over six hours, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger are back online. The failure was caused by an improper update setting, the company claims.
During the downtime, almost 3.5 billion users lost access to their data. By Monday night, Facebook's services had gradually returned. Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp are now working for most. The apps may still be unreliable in the future due to simultaneous connections from several devices. Around 4 a.m., WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart announced on Twitter that everyone could use the service again.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized via Facebook. "Sorry for any inconvenience today, because I know how much you rely on us to keep in touch with the people you care about."
Facebook said the incident occurred while updating its systems. Facebook's router system has a bug that prevented servers from communicating. "We suspect the reason of the outage was a bad configuration," the business claimed. Facebook says it has no indications that data has also been leaked due to the outage. The problems also prevented employees from accessing the internal systems.

On the serious side the only bad thing was the failure of whatsapp - I use it extensively since it's free compared to my phone sms provider...
Google SMS is free now too. Internet connection required.

Is WhatsApp technically superior to other messengers like Viber, Telegram, Skype?
To me the messenger which goes down because of one or two servers is badly designed.
Its relatively easy to use compared to viber and skype, its also just really popular in europe so you're kinda forced to.

Leaving conspiracies and nonsense opinions, a simple technical analysis about what really happened. From the technical standpoint.
Nothing more, nothing less.

I am old enough to remember all people migrating from site to site, from messenger to messenger - just because all others do it.
And I see no difference between Viber and WhatsApp at all.

Great!!! - this way a lot of people finally kept their opinions for themself...and also discovered their family members and (real) friends as "humans"...

I think that "the social media" is the real zombie appocalypse of our days - people on the streets walking silently with their faces on their phones with no reaction to anything except if you take their phone or a failure like this happens.
Social media should have stopped at discussion forums and blogs - facebook, instagram and all the other social crap are doing more bad than good nowadays...and twitter - I really don't understand where is the fun in waking up going to the bathroom and "first tweet of the day: I just took a crap - it was great because I ate a lot of fibers..." - who cares???
I agree with you entirely. Especially about the whtasapp part. Its key for communication at work and even for delivery.
As far as social media, i.e. facebook, twitter etc. I don't have any of those and it doesn't bother me that people do. Yes, who cares. Each to their own.
My friends call me or meet up in person (which is like once a month or sometimes even less), but we are always in touch via phone calls or whatsapp. Even the ones who do have a twitter or facebook.
I have whatever I need in my life at hands/phone call away so it shouldn't bother anyone if they are into or not into social media.
