ASUS And Acer Merger Rumor

ASUS And Acer Merger Rumor

Here's something to discuss. Apparently, there are whispers going around that Acer and ASUS could potentially merge. Both of these companies hail from Taiwan, and ASUS Chairman Johnny Shih did respond to a question concerning a possible merger between the two, where he mentioned that the industry happens to be in a transition period, and people should keep “an open mind” when it comes to mergers. Shih did have a penchant to talk about organic growth for ASUS in the past, but this is a refreshing turnabout.

ASUS’ bread and butter, the sales of motherboards, isn’t exactly doing gangbusters, and ASUS seems to focus more on mobile devices recently, so a merger with Acer might benefit both companies. Of course, these are just rumors as at press time, but the market did react favorably to this rumor, with the respective share prices of both companies going up. Via ubergizmo.

I was under the impression that Acer bought out Gateway? Not merged.

Not caring about the 3 affected brands in the past, I never got past the headlines saying that Acer and Gateway were merging. It appears though, that you're correct. However, Acer spun off it's hardware division (AOpen) years ago so to me it doesn't make sense to now merge with Asus, unless Asus will be controlling all companies involved. I just recently bought a new Asus laptop...so hope this doesn't affect the warranty of that in any way.

Acerus.

Maybe both are seeing a decline in monitor sales due to other alternatives, but I can only think Acer will be getting the better end of the deal. In that sense, I doubt whether it would be a merger in the sense of what the public generally think a merger involves, it would probably be closer, in a sense, to Asus effectively buying out Acer (but not outright)...
