I think I first knew them from Rayman back in the 3DO years.

So basically they are releasing a new chapter every year now?

Why do I feel like the ship sequence from Assassin's Creed 3 got them thinking "hey, pirates! Yeah, let's do ****ing pirates next!"
I played the first one but never beat it. Skipped the second and was given the 3rd for free from a friend buying a graphics card. They're fun for their glitches and bugs but I'll never see how these replaced the Prince of Persia games.
