Apple to launch a 31.6-inch 6K monitor based on mini LED

Apple to launch a 31.6-inch 6K monitor based on mini LED

The monitor would be released later this year, likely Q3 and gets a screen diagonal of 31.6 inches versus a 6K resolution. The backlight will use roughly 500 LEDs with roughly 600 microns size from the Japanese Nichia. Mind you that mini LED is not the same as micro LED.

TF Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo has released a report which lays out Apple’s product interest in mini-LED technology. Kuo says that Apple will launch a 31.6-inch (6K resolution) external display in the second or third quarter of 2019 and feature a mini-LED backlight.

Apple is motivated by mini LED backlighting's support for wide color gamut, high contrast ratio, high dynamic range and local dimming for product differentiation, Kuo was widely cited by the local press as disclosing. Strictly speaking, this is a quasi-mini LED BLU because the chip size is much larger than those of standard mini LEDs, according to industry sources. However, the use of such a BLU will give opportunities for the supply chain makers to improve mini LED production in cost and yield rate, the sources from DigiTimes notes. Kuo describes the new monitor as a "6k3k" display.

Likely the resolution will match the price, to be continued.

I think 8K at 32 inches would be enough to make it "retina"

So, no...not pointless. Just progress.
Agree. Have 27" 4K and it's still not as crisp as i want it. 8K for 27-32" would be closer to fine density.

You just make me feel bad about my 27" 1080p screen. :(
