Apple M1 chip outperforms Intel Core i7-11700K in PassMark (single-thread)

Apple's M1 processor has been sighted in PassMark benchmarking software, compared to the Intel Core i7-11700K the single-core performance crown seems to go to Apple.

The chart is led by the Intel Core i9-11900K with 3,741 points, but it is followed by the Apple M1 with 3,550 points, beating the i7-11700K which is just behind with 3,542 points.

Here's the remarkable thing, the i7-11700K has a TDP of 125W, the M1 15W for. Of course, in multi-core performance the story is very different since we are comparing 8 high-performance cores for Intel versus a combination of 4 high-performance cores + 4 low-power cores for the M1 (BIG.little). The Apple chip runs at 3.20 GHz.

Do any body really believe that Apple engineered a new chip from the ground up... or just stealed a design and then trough lawyers at it. Apple d.....

They did buy a semiconductor company years ago so....Not sure what you're trying to get at.

Neither statement is true. Apple didn't engineer their own chip from the ground up, but they didn't steal anything either. For one thing, they're licensed, but setting that aside, Apple added a lot of their own in-house instructions. That's where all the "magic" happens, because ARM is otherwise woefully mediocre in performance (though, it is great in performance-per-watt). The M1 isn't any ordinary ARM chip.

So what would be the point in saying that when the 11700k is a smidge higher than the AMD counterpart? That would basically just be restating the obvious.

No. And I think that I made myself clear enough.

I find M1 very impressive, and I Wonder if that’s going to be a trend to home computing market.
I would gladly change to RISC (or something more complex based on it) in the near future, but I despise soldered stuff (CPU, RAM etc.) not allowing upgrades, especially on Desktops but also notebooks/laptops.
Coincidentally I started a discussion about Apple's M1 here :D: https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/let%E2%80%99s-talk-about-apple-m1.437313/#post-5899427

Slight note, single (&multi) core performance of the AMD 5xxx processors got slightly better after a bios update (where the cache speeds works much faster).
But damn impressive that new M1 chip. Wished we had that chip for pc's (RIP Intel & AMD though then most likely). I wonder with kickass cooling & more power you could even get much higher...
