Apple introduces the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with the latest M2 CPU
Apple introduced the latest CPU M2 built in-house, as well as the new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air as installed goods, during the developer event WWDC22.
The latest processor "M2" is a 5nm SoC, and the CPU features an 8-core configuration with P core x 4 / E core x 4. It features a memory controller with a 100GB/sec bandwidth and unified memory of up to 24GB.
Performance has improved dramatically over the previous version "M1," with CPU performance increasing by 18%, GPU performance increasing by 35%, and watt performance also improving. When compared to a notebook PC's 10-core CPU, performance is roughly doubled with the same power consumption, and the same performance as a desktop 10-core CPU is realized with 1/4 the power consumption.
The new "MacBook Pro" with "M2" features an 8-core CPU, a 10-core GPU, a maximum of 24GB of memory, and a maximum storage capacity of 2TB SSD. It is around 40% quicker than the M1 when handling RAW photographs in programs such as Affinity Photo, and game performance is likewise approximately 40% faster. It supports ProRes encoding and decoding and can play up to 11 4K video streams and 2 8K video streams.
The display boasts a 500 nit 13-inch Retina display, Wi-Fi 6 and Thunderbolt 4 compatibility, and a battery life of up to 20 hours. The anticipated market price is 178,800 yen (USD 1,299).
A newly revamped 13.6-inch "MacBook Air" with the "M2" processor was also introduced. The primary specs include 8 core CPU and up to 10 core GPU, RAM up to 24 GB, storage up to 2 TB SSD, and a revolutionary 1 billion color display Liquid Retina display.
It has a slim and lightweight design with a thickness of 11.3 mm and a weight of around 1.2 kg, Touch ID and MagSafe charging, a Dolby Atmos-compatible 4-speaker system, and clear call performance with a 3-microphone array. The battery has a maximum life of 18 hours. The anticipated market price is 164,800 yen (USD 1,199).
The new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air will be available beginning next month. The MacBook Air with M1 will also be available for $999.

The M2 is just an incremental update to the already powerful M1. I don't see any compelling reason for existing Macbook Air or Pro owners to upgrade besides the small performance improvement since battery life is the same as M1. That being said, for now nothing comes close to the performance per watt of ether apple SOC in the PC world. Intel has the performance crown but their CPU's are power hungry and AMD is not much better. You have to hand it to Apple for pushing the industry forward in terms of low power high performance SOC.

Powerful for native ARM apps, garbage if you need to emulate anything x86.

Anyone know when the next major Apple event is? Wondering if we'll hear anything about VR later this year, or not until 2023.

One slide says up to 20h battery life, the next says up to 18h battery life: what gives?
Would never buy this, specially after they forgot how to properly do cooling with not so old models.
That and making sure no one can get spare parts to fix them so they can claim water damage and sell a new laptop.
PS: After watching the mac presentation I now know: Mac Air is 18 hours and Mac Pro 20 hours. Knowing Apple, if you really want a Mac, go with the Air: passive cooling equals less problems.
