AMD's Upcoming "Phoenix" Ryzen 7 7840U Silicon Could Shake Up the Ultra-Thin Notebook Market

AMD's Upcoming

Recent Cinebench R23 screenshots have revealed that the 28-Watt Ryzen 7 7840U is outperforming the previous-generation 55 W flagship, the Ryzen 9 6900HX, with all eight "Zen 4" CPU cores enabled and a fast RDNA3 graphics architecture-based iGPU.

AMD's 4 nm "Phoenix" silicon could turn the company's fortunes around in the ultra-thin notebook space. The upcoming Ryzen 7040-series "Phoenix" could give competing 15-28 W-category 13th Gen Core processors a run for their money, especially those with lower P-core counts, such as 2P+8E. If the Cinebench R23 multi-threaded score of 14285 points for the 7840U is anything to go by, then the 15-28 W models of "Phoenix" could prove to be formidable challengers in the ultra-thin notebook market. Furthermore, the 7840U APU also scored around 700 points in Cinebench R20 single-core, 3000 points in 3DMark TimeSpy Graphics, and 8000 points in FireStrike, all with built-in RDNA3 iGPU scores.

While the Ryzen 7040U series has not been officially announced yet, AMD has confirmed that it will launch 7040HS laptops next month, albeit with a one-month delay from what was previously announced at CES 2023. The 7840U part may also pique the interest of handheld gaming system manufacturers.

@Hilbert Hagedoorn, would you ever consider doing laptop reviews?

If AMD manages to produce enough Zen 4 laptop chips and Intel doesn't do any shady under-the-table stuff, AMD could potentially take a big bite out of the laptop market.
Both HS and U Zen 4 + RDNA3 chips look extremely promising.

Give me an ITX board with one of these chips, dual-channel memory, a gen 4/5 x16 slot, and at least one M.2 slot and I'd definitely buy it.
