AMD's Next-Gen Wichita and Krishna APUs Detailed

by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 08/16/2011 01:24 PM | source: | 0 comment(s)

If there is one spot where information leaks it seems to be donim haber. New slided popped up showing information on AMD's Next-Generation Wichita and Krishna APUs. The new APUs (CPU+GPU) are planned for 2012 and are part of AMDs Deccan low-power solutions.

The products need to be seen and ranged in the same segment as Intel's Atom and VIA's Nano processors. Currently we have the "Zacate" and "Ontario" processors like the E350 filling that job. The future platform will be named "Deccan," and will see two APUs codenamed "Wichita" and "Krishna,".

For the next generation AMD is planning to move into the 28 nanometer node and will place four x86-64 cores based on the Bobcat architecture on a single piece of silicon, with an integrated memory controller and AMD Radeon discrete-class graphics.

Wichita and Krishna are complete single-chip designs, meaning that the FCH or Fusion Controller Hub merged into the APU silicon. Motherboards and notebook logic boards will have just one big chip, with no "chipset" of any form.

And that means that Wichita and Krishna will be SoC (system on chip). Check out some of the slides.
