AMD ZEN3 to get see Series B450 and X470 motherboard support after all

AMD ZEN3 to get see Series B450 and X470 motherboard support after all

AMD just issued a press statement where they are explaining that AMD B450 and X470 chipsets could become compatible with the new “Zen 3” era of processors.

As AMD heads into the upcoming “Zen 3” architecture, there are considerable technical challenges that face a CPU socket as long-lived as AMD Socket AM4.  For example, AMD recently announced that they would not support “Zen 3” on AMD 400 Series motherboards due to serious constraints in SPI ROM capacities in most of the AMD 400 Series motherboards. This is not the first time a technical hurdle has come up with Socket AM4 given the longevity of this socket, but it is the first time our enthusiasts have faced such a hurdle. Over the past week, AMD has closely reviewed your feedback on that news: they've watched every video, read every comment, and saw every Tweet.

-- AMD -- We hear that many of you hoped for a longer upgrade path. We hear your hope that AMD B450 and X470 chipsets would carry you into the “Zen 3” era. Our experience has been that large-scale BIOS upgrades can be difficult and confusing especially as processors come on and off the support lists.  As the community of Socket AM4 customers has grown over the past three years, our intention was to take a path forward that provides the safest upgrade experience for the largest number of users.  However, we hear you loud and clear when you tell us you would like to see B450 or X470 boards extended to the next generation “Zen 3” products. As the team weighed your feedback against the technical challenges we face, we decided to change course. As a result, we will enable an upgrade path for B450 and X470 customers that adds support for next-gen AMD Ryzen Processors with the “Zen 3” architecture.  This decision is very fresh, but here is a first look at how the upgrade path is expected to work for customers of these motherboards.

  1. We will develop and enable our motherboard partners with the code to support “Zen 3”-based processors in select beta BIOSes for AMD B450 and X470 motherboards.
  2. These optional BIOS updates will disable support for many existing AMD Ryzen™ Desktop Processor models to make the necessary ROM space available.
  3. The select beta BIOSes will enable a one-way upgrade path for AMD Ryzen Processors with “Zen 3,” coming later this year. Flashing back to an older BIOS version will not be supported.
  4. To reduce the potential for confusion, our intent is to offer BIOS download only to verified customers of 400 Series motherboards who have purchased a new desktop processor with “Zen 3” inside. This will help us ensure that customers have a bootable processor on-hand after the BIOS flash, minimizing the risk a user could get caught in a no-boot situation.
  5. Timing and availability of the BIOS updates will vary and may not immediately coincide with the availability of the first “Zen 3”-based processors.
  6. This is the final pathway AMD can enable for 400 Series motherboards to add new CPU support. CPU releases beyond “Zen 3” will require a newer motherboard.
  7. AMD continues to recommend that customers choose an AMD 500 Series motherboard for the best performance and features with our new CPUs.

There are still many details to iron out, but we’ve already started the necessary planning. As we get closer to the launch of this upgrade path, you should expect another post like this to provide the remaining details and a walkthrough of the specific process.

This is good news and I had an inkling of suspicion they would walk back on this. It will be a wait and see approach from my end in regards to whether Zen 3 is worth the upgrade from my 3700X. I like AMD, but they aren't the best at launches. I bought my 3700X months after release and they still hadn't ironed out BIOS issues yet.

"AMD weighted the potential storm against the challenges (and chip set profit) their team faces"
HOORAY! Now you don't have to coat your fans so they don't get brown badness all over them, AMD.
People will be happy with AMD now and I can open up a new metal recycling center for all those disused pitchforks.
The board partners should make the update by a board by board basis for B450 because not every board might not be able to support Zen3 as far as stability goes due to not so great VRMs. There are some B450 boards that support 3900/3950x CPUs but can't overclock due to not so great VRMs.

From everything I've heard on the public-facing side of the news, and things I've heard that aren't public (I know some people), there isn't going to be a massive jump again in wattage consumed by newly-introduced high-core-count processors (more than 8 cores).
2xxx series - up to 8c 16t, 3xxx - up to 16c 32t = big jump & double the cores
4xxx series - I highly doubt, and have heard nothing relating to the release of more than 16 cores 32 thread processors for mainstream AM4.
Why?
Well, maybe I'm just selectively deaf, or this info is kept from board partners at this time. No one that I know has gotten anything from AMD that I know of indicative of any sizeable jump in TDP / Wattages.

So of course we well know if you're going to even attempt to overclock a 12-core or 16-core processor, a budget board (or 'non-enthusiast main-stream board' in this case) is not a good starting point at any rate - whether using intel or AMD chips. You and most others know that the Z or X series boards (product line dependent) are the go-to for a decent overclock and not drastically shortening the life of expected componentry. Plus, you don't really have to overclock anything besides AMD's most budget offerings to get the most out of them, they handle themselves pretty well at stock.

Want to OC? Buy a GOOD solid Z-series or X-series board (depending if AMD or intel again). Skip the A & B-series (and intel Q-series or H-series boards). Leave the B-series boards for the rest of the folks who just want to put the system together and leave it stock (aside of XMP) and enjoy the good value for many years.
None of this is an attempt at being condescending, etc, nor is there anything to be read 'between the lines'. Just take at face value without emotion.

That said, AMD is going to have less issues with the board manufacturers AND customers with enabling selective support VS just saying 'nope / noper'.
Ironically, I sent that exact statement onto AMD's Reddit post about it the other day. I hope that's what helped. I said you don't need to give it to everyone, for every board. No one's asking that. We just want it available should we choose to take a budget-friendly path and merely wish to update the CPU and not change boards, invalidating most copies of Windows in the process.
I presume that's a fair middle ground. That's fair to both consumers and the guys at AMD product development. No one gets barbeque'd or (pitch)forked.

B450/X470 board owners, rest well.

AMD are pretty famous for doing pretty good and then being their own worst enemy and its usually because of their marketing people.

I'd like to think they will change because of this, but this isn't the last time this will happen.

this is pbo and that is my 3800x results also the 3950x goes up to 4.73 where is the problem the minus 0.20ghz?842

That's good news for us using the X370 platform.
Having to buy a new motherboard would probably prevent X470 owners from buying Zen 3 CPUs, which could probably cause Zen 2 prices not to drop.
So now, I'll just patiently wait until Zen 2 gets dirt cheap in the autumn, and then I'll replace my Ryzen 1700.
