AMD will rename FreeSync 2 towards FreeSync 2 HDR
As the title states, AMD will be renaming FreeSync 2 towards FreeSync 2 HDR. Admittedly a good move. FreeSync (the original one) and FreeSync 2 often got confused, as what the revision 2 exactly means and does. FreeSync 2 really is LFR and HDR compatibility added to what FreeSync 1 offers.
During an interview with PC Perspective, a spokesperson of AMD made this news info public. If a monitor received a FreeSync 2 certification, it must support at least HDR600, 99 percent of BT.709 and 90 percent of the DCI P3 color spectrum. It is also mentioned there's a requirement on minimum response time, albeit a figure is not disclosed.
I think it is a good move to separate the two a bit more, FreeSync 2 HDR has little to do with variable refresh rates. Yesterday we reviewed a FreeSync 2 HDR monitor, check that article out right here.

How about this "Freesync 2 HDR LFR"?
Also, does anyone know how the performance (input lag) of LFR differs from old-school V-sync? Seems like each one would result in the same lag whether the previous frame is duplicated or next frame is delayed?
I imagine it adds some input lag but it only comes into play at framerates below 30fps.. at that point both G-Sync and Freesync turn the motion such into a mess without it that you'd probably accept significant input lag to prevent it. It's more of a like a "safety net" when the FPS dips below 30 to maintain smoothness than something you want to be running at all the time.

Why not keep it simple and just make it "FreeSync HDR". Companies love there version numbers.

I guess they think version 2 isn't enough to call attention to it.
So now it requires 600, not 400? That will make the monitors really expensive

For Freesync, the low-end is higher than for G-sync (30fps is the standard G-sync minimum) usually in the 40s but on some monitors even higher.
For example:
